2014-2015 HUMANITIES ARCHIVE

Bard on the beach "antony and cleopatra" workshop

In preparation for our biennial trip to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in June, we were fortunate enough to have two experienced Bard on the Beach teaching professionals work with our classes to introduce plot. character, and theme elements of Antony and Cleopatra. We welcomed Mike Stack and PG Mini Alumni Kayla Doerksen  for a morning of body moving and universal theme exploration.

b.c. sOCIAL sTUDIES GROUP EXAM

On March 2, the classes worked on a cooperative group exam where each member was responsible for being an expert in a certain aspect of BC history. With all the brain power gathered at each table, it was no surprise there were so many confident smiles halfway through the exercise!

tHE rETRIAL OF lOUIS rIEL

At the end of January, we concluded our studies on the trial of Louis Riel by holding two mock retrials. The Humanities classes would like to thank Mr. Mike Huot for helping us understand the workings of the courtroom in preparation for these retrials. It was interesting to note that based on very similar facts of the cases, the juries of the two blocks returned different verdicts: 1-1 returned a verdict of guilty and 1-2 returned a verdict of not guilt on grounds of insanity.

The great southern cook-off 2015!

May 11 marked the return of the Great Southern Cookoff! To conclude our studies around To Kill a Mockingbird, both blocks worked hard at researching and preparing tasty treats from down south. This year's offering raised the culinary bar to new heights with such savory dishes as hoppin' johns (or was that skippin' jennies?!), hush puppies, gumbo and the palate-challenging, chitterlings! Our classes really pleased our collective sweet teeth, with such delights as scripture cake, two different peach cobblers, a chocolate chess pie and a 13 key lime pie. And of course, we welcomed back the  perennial crowd-pleasers, hoe cakes.
